What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a technique designed to facilitate the relaxation necessary to explore the deepr layers the self. As humans we need to be in the right state in order to non-judgementally navigate and explore the multi-dimensional and complex terrain of sensation, emotions, thoughts, and belief systems and unconscious narratives which shape our perception and reality. When we feel safe, supported, and content for now, we might begin to gently open towards deeper experiences, and healing. Conscious opening and closing allow us to feel secure as we progress from the shoreline, wading deeper into the waters of the subconscious.
There are many different techniques however what they all share is the creation of an intention; deep hearts desire (sankalpha) and a gradual progression inwards from physical sensations through the “being” state of expansive awareness.
Why Yoga Nidra?
As we navigate the ever-increasing pace of our lives today we have become a society of human doings versus human beings with many of us find ourselves in a cycle of busy, depletion, and exhaustion. We exist in a culture that often rewards us for multitasking, productivity, and performance over attention and care, and encourages us to obtain value through chasing external means of value and consumption. More and more we are defined by a yardstick that measures our success in units of capital such as money, body size and shape, and power. Yoga Nidra opens the door to another possibility; a sanctuary, a refuge, an oasis of stillness that allows us to truly rest and connect with our deeper heart’s desire and possibility. Through an understanding of this practice, we become aware of the patterns that shape our belief systems and unconscious habit loops (adapted ways of relating to our moment-to-moment experiences). Through awareness, we find the capacity for change.

Laeonie Gano
Yoga and Eastern Philosophy have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the physical practice to the esoteric ideas, I have crafted my life around understanding myself through yoga. I'm a mother of two, a sister of two, a wife, a daughter, a friend and a student of life. I have traveled all over the planet and watched the sun rise and set over many different oceans. I've had lots, and I've had nothing. I still can't tell you which is better. I love to cook and I love to laugh. I believe that goodness is innate and I strive to recognize it in myself and in others everyday.
My journey as a yoga teacher is a beloved undertaking that has enriched my life experience in a profound and lasting way. I have been inspired and educated by many teachers over the last two decades and I like to think my style is an amalgamation of all of them. To me yoga is the great metaphor for life. Holding- releasing, holding- releasing ...searching for balance… reaching for stillness… finding connection… merging…dissipating…Being. This is the road we are all traveling on.
Laeonie is a Senior Teacher of Yoga Nidra, Restorative and Hatha. She has run both 200 HR and specialty certification courses and is a senior faculty member for Empowered Yoga 200HR, 500HR and 800HR programs. Her teaching style and abilities will appeal to a broad range of ages and abilities. She has worked extensively with prenatal and postnatal yoga as well as providing Doula services and prenatal education. Laeonie has been involved with numerous fundraisers and yoga outreach programs including Yoga in the Heart, which benefitted WIN House, Finding the Balance – a program targeting youth at risk, and a pilot program at Alberta Hospital bringing awareness to mental health.
